POPULOUS' CONSOL ENERGY CENTER BECOMES FIRST NHL LEED GOLD ARENA

New arena is greenest in the NHL
The Pittsburgh Penguins announced Wednesday that the CONSOL Energy Center has achieved LEED Gold Certification. The arena is the first NHL arena to ever achieve LEED Gold Certification; it is Populous' fifth project to achieve Certification.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the nationally-accepted standard for the design, construction, and operation of green buildings. LEED ratings are based on a point system that measures the impact on the environment and those who use the building.
The CONSOL Energy Center achieved 42 points under this system, a minimum of 39 points was required for LEED Gold Certification.
The 735,000 square-foot CONSOL Energy Center features a four-sided scoreboard, 66 suites, 32 loge boxes, and a view of the famous Golden Triangle visible from the upper concourse. The arena will host hockey games, basketball games, concerts and other events.
"In just weeks, the first puck will drop in another innovative Populous building" said Rick Martin, Populous Senior Principal. "CONSOL Energy Center having achieved LEED Gold Certification is an unprecedented accomplishment, something we will continue to use as a benchmark for the future."
The Penguins were committed to having a LEED certified arena from the start of the project.

- Demolition & construction waste diversion (93.7% by weight)
- Certified wood (82.0% of total wood value)
- Energy efficiency (30.6% annual cost savings)
