POPULOUS' NEW TRACK DESIGN MARKS A NEW ERA FOR SILVERSTONE
Date: April 29, 2010
Project: Silverstone Race Circuit
The new look Silverstone race circuit in Northamptonshire was unveiled today by HRH the Duke of York. The track, which has been conceived by the global architectural design practice Populous, includes six new corners and now totals 3.66 miles in length. Ever since Silverstone was re-awarded the British Grand Prix late last year, Populous has worked closely with the British Racing Drivers Club to ensure that the circuit was not only delivered on schedule but that the changes enhanced the racing for both driver and spectator.
The remit for Populous was to ensure the future of the event for the next 17 years and fulfil a promise to build a track that will surpass the greatness of its’ past. The multi-million pound investment into a new Grand Prix track, and improved spectator viewing facilities, is part of a major redevelopment that will ensure Silverstone remains a world-class venue where all forms of motor sport can be celebrated in style.
In addition to the new track, Populous has provided the new layout for the paddock and pit lane that is due for completion in 2011.
Commenting on today's opening, John Barrow, Senior Principal of Populous said:
"Silverstone produced an exciting challenge for us, as on top of the time-frame we had the task of improving on what was already one of the greatest circuits in the world. Having completed the first stage of the redevelopment work on the circuit, we are delighted to continue our relationship with the BRDC into next year and are pleased to be involved with the further improvement to the pit lane and paddock here at Silverstone."
