ONEOK Field, the new ballpark for the Tulsa Drillers, opens today, in Tulsa's historic and architecturally charming downtown.
Its design reflects back to the early part of the century, as Tulsa's downtown began to take shape and art deco informed many of the buildings' designs.
"While we did not want to create an outwardly art deco building, you will see a tribute to the genre in the ballpark's streamlined forms and rounded surfaces," said Steve Boyd, Populous project designer.
Just as oil played a large part in developing the city over the years, the ballpark’s materials were thoughtfully chosen to create a colorful and textured, layered effect, reminiscent of the oil deposits that produced a beautiful strata of colors underneath the park's current site.
The earth-tone exterior facade – a blend of brick and zinc, an ever-changing metal – will help the building age gracefully over time.
"We chose zinc because it is a material never before used in ballpark design, and for its chameleon-like quality," said Boyd. "Depending on how you position it on the building, it can change color and appearance."
Throughout the ballpark's exterior, 16 four-foot by four-foot art deco medallions pay tribute to the history of the area.
Once inside, fans can expect to find that the 5,500-seat ballpark boasts 30 suites, a 360-degree concourse and a variety of group and kids areas. A 2,000 square-foot conference center was integrated into the design, creating opportunity for non-game day use.
"Today's baseball fans expect a variety of amenities and entertainment when they go to a game. They will find that here," said David Bower, Populous principal. "Because the ballpark is central to the Tulsa community, it has a great opportunity to serve as a catalyst for growth in downtown Tulsa."
The site serves as a welcoming to the nearby Greenwood district and is oriented to provide beautiful views of downtown Tulsa, while extending the city’s urban footprint, serving as a bridge between many neighborhoods surrounding downtown.
