POPULOUS UNVEILS DESIGN FOR NEW
EVANSVILLE ARENA

Evansville Arena

Date: August 20, 2009

New downtown arena a modern expression aimed to continue downtown revitalization

At a public meeting last night, Populous unveiled its design plans for the new Evansville Arena, an arena designed to draw people together in an urban environment.

The new arena will be a cornerstone for continued revitalization of downtown Evansville, Indiana. Its sweeping curved forms evoke the unique nature of the horseshoe bend in the Ohio River while providing an aesthetic that is of its time, reflecting its citizens' forward-thinking nature. The use of native Indiana limestone at the arena's base creates a visual grounding for the building while also respecting the materiality of Evansville's civic buildings. The focused use of glass is intended to give frequent views both out of and into the building and to become a beacon for the city and its development. The 278,000 square foot arena is located at the corner of Main Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard. It will be the home court for the Evansville Aces men's and women's basketball teams; it also has a regulation NHL ice sheet and hockey support spaces. The multi-purpose venue will also accommodate shows, exhibitions and concerts.

"This is Evansville's arena," said Jim Swords, AIA, Populous principal in charge of the project. "You won’t find this design anywhere else."
