SKILLED PARK WINS MAJOR REGIONAL ARCHITECTURE AWARD
Date: April 27, 2009
Projects: Skilled Park
Populous designed Skilled Park at Robina on the Gold Coast has won the Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) Karl Langer Award for Building of the Year Gold Coast.
Skilled Park also won an RAIA Gold Coast Regional Commendation at the Awards, announced on 24 April, 2009 on the Gold Coast, and the stadium will now go forward into the Queensland State Awards, which will be decided on 17th July, 2009. The 27,400 seat Skilled Park was purpose built for the Gold Coast Titans NRL team in a tight two year timeframe to ensure the stadium was ready for the 2008 National Rugby League season.
Situated on a Greenfield site, Skilled Park is the first stage of a new urban village and the catalyst for future commercial, retail and entertainment development. It has also been the centre of a new transport hub, and the Client, Stadiums Queensland, said one of the project highlights is that 80% of patrons now travel to and from events by public transport.
Skilled Park senior principal Paul Henry said:
It is great to see stadiums, such as Skilled Park, recognised as examples of major civic public infrastructure. The stadium has come of age. Skilled Park is an example of a new design movement of high quality regional stadia developing around the world – sustainable and able to host a range of sporting and entertainment event.
